CRITICAL ARTIFACTS
Workshop by Elke Sterling-Presser
AI-generated content is revolutionizing the world, promising speed and productivity. However, concerns about spatial qualities, ethics, and originality need to be addressed. AI complements designers by enhancing efficiency and idea generation, but is it truly capable to replace a human-centered perspective in the field of spatial design? A critical ‘collaboration’ between humans and machines is crucial for shaping the future of design.
The "Critical Artifacts" workshop initiated experimental design processes between AI-generated 2-D imaging and 3D computational design tools to experiment with methodologies of de- and reconstruction of existing spatial objects and situations. It empowered participating students to utilize AI as a critical tool and offered opportunities to initiate imagination aligned with specific spatial investigations. A profound understanding of design fundamentals and deep knowledge of spatial qualities cannot be replaced by AI and remains essential in directing technologies toward desired outcomes.
