Designed with resource efficiency in mind, the bridge minimizes the amount of material used while achieving a span of 66 meters over the entire floodplain. The bridge's single span construction avoids constraints during construction in the water area and potential flood risks. Additionally, the bridge promotes green mobility and provides a place for people to pause, contemplate and interact with the landscape.
Kempten Footbridge's superstructure is accessible from both sides and is barrier-free, providing a comfortable crossing and a pleasant quality of stay on the bridge. Wooden seating invites users to pause and take in the views, while efficient lighting integrated into the handrails illuminates the bridge discreetly. To prevent vandalism, an anti-vandalism system consisting of elongated triangular steel profiles integrated into the upper surface of the steel structure is installed at the top of the arch to discourage people from sitting or climbing on the support structure.
Overall, the new Illersteg Kempten Footbridge sets a new benchmark in sustainable and elegant bridge design, offering both functional and aesthetic benefits to the town and its residents.
