Sustainable Construction in Saudi Arabia
Exploring Opportunities in Sustainable Construction in Saudi Arabia
Last week, I had the privilege of representing STERLING PRESSER | architects+engineers as part of a delegation organized by the Euro-Mediterranean-Arab Association (EMA e.V.) and the Netzwerk Architekturexport NAX. This Markterkundungsreise (market exploration trip), supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz (BMWK), brought us to Saudi Arabia from November 23-27, 2024.
As the founding Partner of STERLING PRESSER | architects+engineers and a proud NAX member, I joined a vibrant group of architects and engineers on a mission to exchange ideas, connect with local experts, and explore opportunities for collaboration in sustainable building practices.
The journey started at the German-Saudi Arabian Liaison Office for Economic Affairs (AHK Saudi-Arabia), with insightful briefings by industry leaders and a warm welcome from German Ambassador Michael Kindsgrab.
Highlights included:
- A productive meeting with the Saudi Council of Engineers, where we discussed shared goals for sustainable and innovative construction.
- A fascinating tour of the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) and its ambitious projects.
- Networking at the beautiful German Embassy in Riyadh, fostering new relationships and partnerships.
- A presentation to Diriyah Company l شركة الدرعية on innovative and sustainable design approaches.
- Architects' Exchange with Saudi Architects in collaboration with the Architecture & Design Commission, the Ministry of Culture at the Ministry of Investment.
- Engaging discussions in Jeddah at the Jeddah Chamber, where we connected with leading members of Saudi Arabia's architecture, construction, and real estate sectors.
Special thanks to the EMA, NAX, Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, the Jeddah Chamber, and the many partners who made this exchange so impactful, including Diriyah Company, Neom and the Al Balad Development Company. Your efforts to connect international and local expertise continue to inspire innovation and meaningful partnerships.
